AI-Native 6G RAN: AI-RAN Alliance Perspective

Abstract: 6G will redefine mobile networks as intelligent, AI-native infrastructures rather than pure connectivity platforms. Central to this transformation is the AI-Native Radio Access Network (AI-RAN), where AI is embedded into the design, operation, and optimization of the RAN. This keynote introduces the three dimensions of AI-RAN: AI-for-RAN, enhancing efficiency and performance; AI-on-RAN, enabling AI-driven services; and AI-and-RAN, utilizing distributed compute within the RAN for AI workloads. The presentation will also highlight the role of the AI-RAN Alliance, a global initiative of operators, vendors, academia, startups and government bodies driving collaborative innovation. Together, these efforts illustrate how AI-Native 6G RAN can unlock new economic value and intelligent services across industries.

Bio: Dr. Alex Jinsung Choi, a South Korean luminary in the global mobile telecommunications sector, boasts over three decades of industry experience. Currently, Dr. Choi is working at SoftBank Corp.’s Research Institute of Advanced Technology and continues to champion innovation at the intersection of AI, mobile technology, and network architecture. He is also currently the Chair of the AI-RAN Alliance. He is dedicated to advancing technology frontiers, crafting strategies that enhance both business and consumer experiences, and guiding the industry towards a more connected, intelligent, and open future.

Xavier Costa-Pérez

Bio: Xavier Costa-Pérez is an ICREA Research Professor and Scientific Director at the i2cat Research Center, concurrently leading 6G R&D at NEC Laboratories Europe. His team consistently delivers impactful research, evidenced by publications in top-tier scientific venues and numerous awards for successful technology transfers. He actively secures funding through internal and external competitive R&D programs and contributed significantly to standardization bodies, including 3GPP, O-RAN, ETSI ISAC, and IETF. Notably, his innovations have been integrated into commercial mobile phones, base stations, and network management systems, and have spurred the creation of multiple start-ups. Dr. Costa-Pérez has held various leadership roles across industry and research, including Deputy General Manager, Chief Researcher, and member of Technology and Scientific Advisory Boards. He is a recognized contributor to multiple standard specifications who actively participated in bodies such as IEEE 802.11, 802.16, WiFi Alliance, and 3GPP. He has also served on organizing committees for prominent conferences (e.g., ACM MOBICOM, IEEE INFOCOM) and as an Editor for leading journals like IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (TMC), IEEE Transactions on Communications (TCOM), as well as Elsevier Computer Communications (COMCOM). Dr. Costa-Pérez holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Telecommunications from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), receiving a national award for his doctoral thesis. He is the inventor of approximately 100 granted patents.

Mun Choon

Bio: Mun Choon CHAN graduated with a BS in Computer and Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was a Member of Technical Staff in the Networking Research Laboratory, Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies before joining the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2004. He is currently a Professor and Vice Dean of Graduate Studies of the School of Computing (SoC), as well as the Lab Director of the NUS-NCS Joint Laboratory. He has published more than 140 conference/journal papers and has been awarded 7 US patents. He has won three best paper awards (ICNP 2019, SOSR 2019, ICDCN 2016) and was awarded the Facebook Networking Systems Research Award in 2019. His current research includes mobile sensing, programmable networks and 5G networks.

Bio: Hanen Garcia is Chief Architect, Telecommunications, in the CTO Office at Red Hat. With over 25 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, he specializes in building advanced network solutions and value-added services for global telecom operators.

In his current role, Hanen is at the forefront of driving strategic initiatives and architectures to guide telecommunications service providers through their network transformation journey.

Hanen holds a Master of Engineering in Innovation Management from ÉTS in Canada and a Master of Engineering in Telecommunications from Polytech Nancy in France.

Bio: Chih-Lin is the Chief Scientist of Wireless Technologies at ChinaMobile. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. She has won the 2005 IEEE ComSoc Stephen Rice Prize, 2018 IEEE ComSoc Fred W. Ellersick Prize, 7th IEEE Asia-Pacific Outstanding Paper Award, and 2015 IEEE Industrial Innovation Award for Leadership and Innovation in Next-Generation Cellular Wireless Networks.

She is the Co-Chair of the O-RAN Technical Steering Committee and an O-RAN Executive Committee Member, the Chair of FuTURE 5G/6G SIG, the Chair of WAIA (Wireless AI Alliance) Executive Committee, an Executive Board Member of GreenTouch, a Network Operator Council Founding Member of ETSI NFV, a Steering Board Member and Vice Chair of WWRF, a Steering Committee member and the Publication Chair of IEEE 5G and Future Networks Initiatives, the Founding Chair of the IEEE WCNC Steering Committee, the Director of the IEEE ComSoc Meetings and Conferences Board, a Senior Editor of IEEE Trans. She has given more than 100 5G and 6G keynote speeches worldwide and has over 23000 Google Scholar citations in the past decade.

She is a Life Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of WWRF. Her current research interests center around ICDT Deep Convergence: “From Green & Soft to Open & Smart”.
